NYSERDA Commercial and Industrial Outreach
Luthin Associates was selected as a part of a two firm team to conduct buildings outreach for the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA). Luthin Associates was responsible for all healthcare, higher education facilities outreach from December 2012 through January 2016. The goal of this outreach, was "to facilitate the implementation of energy related projects to reduce operating costs, promote sustainability, and increase competitiveness of the clients in New York State". Our outreach efforts resulted in just under 1,100 applications with an estimated $131 million in estimated incentive awards. The total savings resulted in a reduction of over 480 million kWh and over 780,000 MMBtus. Additionally, over 70 MW of demand reduction was achieved for the Demand Management Program (DMP). Luthin Associates itself influenced over 135 million kWh and over 387,000 MMBtu reduction through its outreach efforts over the duration of the contract period.
Accomplishing the energy savings and achieving the incentives started through identification of key factors in each program vertical that would influence energy efficiency projects. Additionally, barriers to implementation were pinpointed. Our efforts then focused on identification of the key players at each facility. The most effective mode of change was to engage Hospital Systems and School Systems, but sometimes ESCO's, Consulting and Engineering firms were also approached. We then leveraged relationships with third party market partners, such as utility companies, to effect the greatest amount of change.
Our team effected change by guiding customers through the application process and providing continuous support during the pre- and post-application process. We continuously followed-up on their energy efficiency goals and guided customers and their potential consultants through the Consolidated Funding Application (CFA) and eCommerce forms.
Luthin Associates assisted healthcare customers to achieve over 81 million kWh savings (17% of the total program savings) and over 237,000 MMBtu savings (31% of the total program savings). Similarly, in higher education, Luthin effected almost 54 million kWh savings (11% of the outreach program total) and just under 150,000 MMBtu savings (19% of the outreach program total).
Beginning in May of 2015, NYSERDA asked Luthin to assist in the development and implementation of the REV Campus Challenge (REV CC).
The REV CC is part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), a strategy to build a clean, resilient, and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers. The REV CC promotes clean energy efforts by recognizing and supporting colleges and universities in New York State that implement clean energy projects and principles on campus, in the classroom, and in surrounding communities.
REV Campus Challenge recognizes achievements among institutions of higher education and enables exchange of best practices and lessons learned. REV Campus Challenge seeks to help colleges and universities meet their financial, environmental, academic, and community goals through clean energy solutions that also help scale up total clean energy use in New York State.
Luthin provides assistance as requested by NYSERDA in developing the REV CC guidelines, participating in phone calls with members and potential members, identifying resources that REV CC members would need and developing the Salesforce database needed to support the REV CC activities.
